The Poets Speaking Beauty (now with spoken word file)
by Nordette A
Sunday, September 24, 2006

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true , whatever is worthy of respect, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if something is excellent or praiseworthy, think about these things. (Phillipians 4:8)

Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love its use will eat its fruit. (Proverbs 18:21)

The poets must dream beauty.

Ugly,
the truth of man,
crawls a nightmare in the day,
laden with hideous creatures, bold and truculent,
breathing Earth's undoing--
the streams polluted, rain forests raped,
godless prayers and chanting hate,
children's corpses left unburied, strewn at the cities' gates,
the zombie throng, the witless masses,
and kings swaying to the clatter of bones--
Wisdom deprivation.
The poets must dream beauty against
annihilation.

The poets must eat beauty.
Wherever finding the plump golden fruit
seize and gobble, chew and churn,
cogitate, regurgitate beauty.

The ugly swells churlish yet giddy with glee,
overshadowing charity with greed,
obese with the hearts of skinny dreamers slain.
It rolls through the woods and over
the plains of man's festering wounds,
the flies and worms its dessert.
So the poets must eat beauty,
chew, cogitate, regurgitate beauty
over blighted plains and into
the darkened wood,
into Earth's streams and her prayers and her open sores,
into the ripped seams of humanity.

The poets ...
The poets.
The poets must ink beauty
into the skins of souls,
from crown to toe tattoo Divine,
purple curlicues of beauty.

Everyday with relentless piercings,
the ugly's inked a heinous scarlet,
the blood of junkies young and younger stabbing needles into veins,
dealers dealing guns, crack cocaine,
drive-by shootings where toddlers play,
Baghdad bombings, London blasts, Ground Zero-shrouded memories
seething prophecies of a mushroom cloud from oil,
and global warming because we're spoiled with convenience,
in love with SUVs,
yet relinquish freedom to bubble wrap of fear-factoring authorities.
We waltz to the white noise of terrorist shit and domestic abominations,
signs of not the times but our madness,

like that woman who murdered that mother and carved that baby
from the womb like a Sierra Leone butcher or a Darfur slayer.
She grew horns and hooves and drowned her sister's children.
The ugly's inked graffiti onto man's tomb,
making proper the grave.

The poets must speak beauty.

Ugly rots man's mouth.
Who must speak its stench?
And only the blind fail to see
the truth of man's depravity.
So, the poets must dream, eat, and ink beauty.
Poets must speak beauty until Beauty comes to feast.

Nordette,
If us poets were to read your work each day we could all learn from your way with words...and get better at what we do.
You have a gift of telling it like it is..
This poem hits home alot with me. I have to fight the darkness each time I write due to sensitivity to world issues and the stories at hand.
Recently, I authenticated myself and told myself "no more".
I have to stay out of the darkenss for those people that I may bring with me unintentionally.
Those are powerful words you have written and your talent is immeasurable. You should be proud!!

We all know that Nordette's voice has a cadence and intonation all her own. My Maine Coon cat, CeCe, who is a true heiffer and usually annoyed at everything, strolled over, sat down and listened intently! Now, that's powerful. This covers the bases of man's seeming inability to realize that he's doing it to himself. Thanks for the well-honed button pushing. Time to go plant a tree and sell my big ol' detroit and buy a hybrid.

THE POETS SPEAKING BEAUTY reflects a very-deeply troubled society in which we live and mirrors life's sordid current events where Nordette lances open culture in a precise, raw view layed out before us with dynamic words that bleed, feel, and scream for change. A poem like this should create closure to dirty deeds done dirt cheap and vigilante society. A call for poets to pen their words and perform them explicitly for the sake of healing the troubled world. The audio is powerful, so damn powerful in fact that Ms. Adams' voice can be heard from the heavenly acoustics of the church to the PA system of the corner gang. With current trends of ugliness, violence, and hatred accelerating, today is the day in which THE POETS SPEAKING BEAUTY should be considered the flagship of the nation's healing and look at our future with confidence for not only ourselves, but that future of our next generation...

You have given us quite a long list of man's evil and I doubt if it is complete. Some might say "it is enough", others don't want to hear. Is ignorance bliss? Sometimes I wonder for when I read of ugly events, I get so depressed that only prayer can uplift me. You are indeed a great poet (and I mean that). Victor

First ... powerful scripture was used as a summary, and especially necessary in this day and age that we live in. Well done!

This is a powerhouse write that, in certain ways, reminded me of Jeremiahs, and Isaiahs, and Ezekiels powerful prophetic laments to a world going mad. Not only were they speaking of future events, they were also addressing much of the indiscretions and sins of the times that they lived in.

Words of life must come from somewhere, the Holy Bible and spiritually enlightened Poet's and writers are a good place to start.

Well done ...

Sometime poets must scream the ugly and NOT the beauty, Nordette, as you have done here. To only speak of beauty is not being truthful. to speak of ugly, likewise is one-sided. There needs to be both. You brought the beauty to us in the form of ugly, and that, my froend, is your very special Muse directing you.
